    Estimating fixed-effect panel stochastic frontier models by model transformation

    Traditional panel stochastic frontier models do not distinguish between unobserved individual heterogeneity and inefficiency. They thus force all time-invariant individual heterogeneity into the estimated inefficiency. Greene (2005) proposes a true fixed-effect stochastic frontier model which, in theory, may be biased by the incidental parameters problem. The problem usually cannot be dealt with by model transformations owing to the nonlinearity of the stochastic frontier model. In this paper, we propose a class of panel stochastic frontier models which create an exception. We show that first-difference and within-transformation can be analytically performed on this model to remove the fixed individual effects, and thus the estimator is immune to the incidental parameters problem.     High-Mobility Pentacene-Based Thin-Film Transistors With a Solution-Processed Barium Titanate Insulator

    Abstract—Pentacene-based organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) with solution-processed barium titanate (Ba1.2Ti0.8O3) as a gate insulator are demonstrated. The electrical properties of pentacene-based TFTs show a high field-effect mobility of 8.85 cm2 · V−1 · s−1, a low threshold voltage of −1.89 V, and a low subthreshold slope swing of 310 mV/decade. The chemical composition and binding energy of solution-processed barium titanate thin films are analyzed through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The matching surface energy on the surface of the barium titanate thin film is 43.12 mJ · m−2, which leads to Stranski–Krastanov mode growth, and thus, high mobility is exhibited in pentacene-based TFTs.     A Simulation Study of Workforce Management for a Two-Stage Multi-Skill Customer Service Center

    This paper considers the parameter optimization of a two-stage multi-skill customer service center, which provides e-commerce services to customers and bears the major operating cost in hiring service agents. Based on the customer flow in the two-stage mixed queueing system, a simulation model is developed to determine the system performance of interest. We present a sensitivity analysis to achieve better savings in the staffing cost and waiting time at a guaranteed service level. A series of simulation experiments are conducted via an Arena simulation platform to figure out the optimal system configurations. The contribution of our works is to provide a decision-making tool for workforce managers to evaluate the performance of the studied customer service centers

    Modulation of Serum Antinuclear Antibody Levels by Levamisole Treatment in Patients With Oral Lichen Planus

    Background/PurposeSerum autoantibodies, including antinuclear antibodies (ANAs), have been found in patients with oral lichen planus (OLP). This study evaluated whether Taiwanese OLP patients had significantly higher frequencies of serum ANAs than healthy control subjects, and whether levamisole treatment could modulate the antibody levels.MethodsThis study used an indirect immunofluorescence technique to measure the baseline serum levels of ANA in a group of 583 Taiwanese OLP patients and 53 healthy control subjects. Seventy-nine ANA-positive OLP patients were treated with levamisole under a regular follow-up schedule in our dental clinic, and their serum ANA levels were measured after treatment.ResultsWe found that the frequencies of serum ANA in patients with OLP (23.2%), erosive OLP (EOLP, 23.8%), major EOLP (31.5%), and minor EOLP (18.1%) were all significantly higher than that (5.7%) in healthy control subjects. In addition, major EOLP patients had a significantly higher serum ANA positive rate than minor EOLP or non-erosive OLP patients. Of 135 ANA-positive OLP patients, 79 were treated with levamisole under a regular follow-up schedule. We found that treatment with levamisole for a period of 2–38 months (mean, 12 ± 9 months) effectively reduced the high mean serum ANA titer (557 ± 98) at baseline to an undetectable level (0) in all ANA-positive OLP patients, regardless of different high initial serum titers of ANA.ConclusionThere was a significantly higher frequency of serum ANA (23.2%) in Taiwanese OLP patients than in healthy control subjects. Treatment with levamisole for 2–38 months reduced the high serum ANA to an undetectable level, and significantly improved the signs and symptoms in all treated OLP patients

    Analysis of bandwidth allocation on end-to-end QoS networks under budget control

    AbstractThis paper considers the problem of bandwidth allocation on communication networks with multiple classes of traffic, where bandwidth is determined under the budget constraint. Due to the limited budget, there is a risk that the network service providers can not assert a 100% guaranteed availability for the stochastic traffic demand at all times. We derive the blocking probabilities of connections as a function of bandwidth, traffic demand and the available number of virtual paths based on the Erlang loss formula for all service classes. A revenue/profit function is studied through the monotonicity and convexity of the blocking probability and expected path occupancy. We present the optimality conditions and develop a solution algorithm for optimal bandwidth of revenue management schemes. The sensitivity analysis and three economic elasticity notions are also proposed to investigate the marginal revenue for a given traffic class by changing bandwidth, traffic demand and the number of virtual paths, respectively. By analysis of those monotone and convex properties, it significantly facilitates the operational process in the efficient design and provision of a core network under the budget constraint

    Use of Fomepizole in Pediatric Methanol Exposure: The First Case Report in Taiwan and a Literature Review

    Methanol poisoning is rare in the pediatric population, but a delay in diagnosis and intervention may cause severe morbidity and mortality. The current therapy for methanol poisoning is ethanol or fomepizole, which acts as a competitive inhibitor of hepatic alcohol dehydrogenase to inhibit the production of toxic metabolites derived from the oxidation of methanol. However, clinical experience in pediatric methanol poisoning is limited, and the safety profiles of the antidotes have not been established in children, especially in Asian populations. This is the first case to describe the use of fomepizole in a child with methanol exposure in Taiwan
